The role and process of painting are recurring themes throughout the work of Tom Crawford. Inquiring into the process, valuing means over ends, ultimately allows a discursive platform to raise the questions, what is painting? Who is it for? And why do it now? By making both "standard" paintings and object paintings Crawford seeks to create a dialogue between the works. In doing so he attempts to reconsider and expose the activity of painting through a dissemination of its process, methods and supporting ephemera. Whilst in some respects continuing traditional investigations into colour, composition and technique, Crawford's playful skepticism ultimately generates a respectful anti-painting where the limits and quandaries of painting and being a painter are primary.
For this exhibition Crawford is showing four works. A Representation of an Orange Pot and Parcel Tape 3 show us a glimpse into studio routine. Debris from the act of painting become the subjects themselves replicated realistically in paint. Coffin is a travel frame commonly used for transporting and protecting artworks. Painted gloss black, this artwork offers us a sceptical look into the life of a painting and the commercial world it depends on. Finally The Up and Coming is a to-scale rendering of a section of construction site fencing. As well as being a parody of minimalist abstract painting it reflects the consequences of the culture industry in relation to urban regeneration and gentrification. More works by Tom Crawford. |
